Audio Design
Now we are talking about Audio, this is good stuff
Good thing I already took the time to think about the audio because this also creates the atmosphere for the game, it really can help sell the game effectively. I already developed the brainstorm for it but if anything I will place the big diagram here, if anything you can click it to zoom in again.
For what I wanted to make for the game, I needed a core soundtrack to really make it, now I know how to make these sounds myself however I know you can find these pieces online, but I wanted to give myself a little challenge in general, so my thought process was to make more ambient sounds but then I thought really that would be more relative to something that is space-themed (which this game is) but would create more of a serious tone to the game, which isn’t what I was looking for.
The Theme Music
I needed futuristic sounds but a hint of heroism to it as the both sides of the teams in the game are trying to do something for a ‘good’ cause. The Rangers are trying to make a settlement to help enrich the planet, which the Aliens don’t want that and want to keep their culture and the planet to themselves as they see these Rangers as invaders. So that’s the image we have. I wasn’t sure how to proceed from there but at least I knew the atmosphere, so I had a look online for inspiration and found this gem by Rene Breitbarth.
Now I wanted to apply that same idea to this game but it could be incorporated into the main menu. So this will be our theme song for the game. which is so cool to think about. I used the slow ambience into a a fast paced type of track that lead into something like this:
It starts off with the ambience, having that old sci-fi sound which relates to the theme of our game and then bunch of ambient drums to really focus on the actions of the players and the circumstances they are in. Additionally I added a extra flair of hip-hop drums at the end just to give it a nice little cohesion where the theme could work with different types of flows in terms of the instrumentals.
The thing is this particular audio sounds quite loud and for the actual game this will be minimised as it could be really annoying to have this sound go off randomly and becoming over-bearing.
Next Steps
The next steps would be to consider the different sounds whilst the player is playing the game, this includes whether their should be different background music in consideration for which side the player is playing as and then the little noises, like the sounds with the doors that become indication for the player. So there is a lot of audio work to be done
