Games for Learning
For this module as you could already probably understand for the title was creating a game that was to make people learn, in this case it was set under a brief of making a game concept that designed for Children to learn, whether it be English, Mathematic or something else. I wasn’t even determined about the age range so in terms of the British Education System, we were free in that regards but in terms of picking a target audience, we went with kids in the Key Stage 1 to learn basic mathematics.
With more games in this genre, they involve powerful and bright colours to keep users of this target demographic interested and something that seems very friendly hence the idea of creating the game around a character went about making something completely silly. I mean the idea of some method to the madness I suppose.
The Concept
This was a group project all in all, and the character we desgined ended up being called Space Raptor which is fairly self explantory. We decided about making a Dinosaur that can go around in space and help kids with numbers.
The Design
The Games Design was also interesting incoporating ideas of a rouge-like where the user will have to travel from door to door and once reaching the door, they have to solve easy math equatiosn by hitting a few enemies that have numbers, having a bigger number then they have.
You would get this number by going through a simple maze and collect certain values and the Space Raptor ship will have enough power to beat them. Obviously if the player get it wrong then they have to start again outside of the room they just lost to. To make sure the little kiddies aren’t dissuaded too much, they don’t ahve to start from the beginning so they can always try again.
Unlike most rogue-like games, these rooms are static and not dynamic.
In addition, adding a sense of customisation for the kids, they can also choose which character they want to play as. We already had the generic Space Raptor who is in green and is the Male form, whilst the one in Yellow is the Female form. This opens up ther type of kids who would like to play the game.
We also designed a big baddy for the narrative as it gives a reason for this world being as it is. To summerise, Space Raptor needs to save the world from Red Raptor and he needs your help to do so.
To add extra features the player can also choose world which relate to specific difficulties and making math equations harder, but the player isn’t forced to do so and is unlocked on the jouney.
